Wireless charging has mainly been used only for smart devices and electric cars. Now, the US Department of Defence’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific wants to make an underwater wireless charging device for their uncrewed underwater vessels.
Underwater Wireless Charging
Current uncrewed underwater vessels (UUV) need to surface and dock on a surface ship to charge its batteries. This leaves the UUV exposed and limits the area it can cover.
With the wireless charging project started by Wayne Liu, UUVs might not need to surface anymore. To test his idea, he made a very simple prototype to prove his concept. Mr. Liu placed his smartphone in a sealed plastic bag which was charging on a wireless charging pad underwater. This demo was enough for SPAWAR researchers to consider making underwater wireless charging a thing.
